Stand on the Side of Love!

With Valentine's Day quickly approaching, February may just be the perfect time to learn about the Standing on the Side of Love Campaign; "a public advocacy campaign that seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression.”

I love this movement because, while it is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association, it really speaks to people of all faiths who are dedicated to speaking up in love for those whose voices are often ignored. In fact, this February 14th marks the second annual "National Standing on the Side of Love Day", so why not celebrate love in a new way this year?

The SSL website is packed with resources, from ideas to help create public events to a list of events already planned in your area, each designed to help UU congregations and all who Stand on the Side of Love “re-imagine a more inclusive Valentine’s Day." 

If there isn't an event near you or if hosting a big event just isn't your style, here are some ways that you and your family can Stand on the Side of Love this Valentines Day and every day this year:

• Print some SSL Valentines and send a few to your Representatives with a request that they take a stand for marriage equality!

• Take a look at the books in your family's library (or at your local library); do they represent ALL families? 
• From And Tango Makes Three to Amazing Mommies to books by Todd Parr, there are so many wonderful stories to help all kids learn that love makes a family. Be sure to check out this excellent blog for more ideas for children's books!

• Engage all ages in a conversation about love with an easy craft!
